Herb collects pins shaped like a painter's pallet. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, in Tuscany. Although born in the small village of Caprese, Michelangelo always considered himself a "son of Florence".

Description:

1984 mixed media
12'h x 10'w x 5'd

An oil painting replica of the front wall of the Sistine Chapel is the centerpiece. Floating in front of the painting is a web of wire, brazed together, resembling a sketch of Michelangelo's face. As though in a museum, the statues of David, painted like patrons and guards, are meandering in front of the painting.

Concepts:

Oil Painting: Central item.

Country Item: The gold leaf manufactured in Italy was used on the painting's background.

Contracted Art: The dozens of unpainted statues of David.

Pun: At the top of the wall is a name plaque which reads: "Iona" (Jona), this stands for Jonah, but may be read "I own a" (Michelangelo). In the middle is a figure holding the skin of a human. In the original mural, Michelangelo put his face on the skin, on this painting, Herb used his own face.
